VPBank Hanoi Marathon 2022 Marks Vietnam's Recovery

HANOI, Oct 16 (DHA Vietnam) - Nearly 9,000 runners competed on Sunday at the VPBank Hanoi Marathon 2022, Hanoi's official international race, marking the return of international events to Vietnam.

Of the total, more than 1,000 runners came from countries around the world. Proceedings of the marathon were covered live on state-run television VTV.

Runner Trinh Quoc Luong became the winner for the 42.195-km distance (Full Marathon) at 02:29:12. Among women runners, Nguyen Thi Oanh seized the first place in the FM distance after 02:50:26.

At the 21-km distance (Half Marathon) for men, runner Nguyen Van Lai hit the Finish line first with 1:10:10, while runner Lo Thi Thanh became the woman winner after having spent 01:23:51 for the distance.

At dawn on October 16, from Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square, the new starting point of this year's marathon at Hoan Kiem Lake, runners competing in the distances of 42.195 km, 21 km, 10 km and 4.2 km (Mini Marathon) respectively strode on the track standardized by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Race (AIMS).

The VPBank Hanoi Marathon 2022 track runs past familiar landmarks of the capital, five famous lakes, more than 80 streets, and reaches the Finish line on Dinh Tien Hoang street, the road along Hoan Kiem Lake bank.

Of the 3,000 runners registered to compete in the FM distance category, 2.047 runners turned up at the Start line at 4:00 a.m. (Hanoi time, GMT+7), the largest number of FM runners at a race in Vietnam.

In the evening of October 15, the Opening Ceremony of the marathon and an International Choir Festival took place beside Hoan Kiem Lake.

The VPBank Hanoi Marathon 2022 takes place just a few days after Vietnam announced that its GDP in the third quarter of 2022 jumped 13.67 percent from the same period last year, a record pace, creating a premise for the full-year economic growth to rise an expected 8 percent, above the 6.0-6.5 percent target set by the government at the start of the year.

Held annually since 2018, the VPBank Hanoi Marathon has become Hanoi’s official race and won recognition to be a member of the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) since 2019, with a running track standardized by AIMS experts and the Vietnam Athletics Federation. The VPBank Hanoi Marathon has joined the Age Group Ranking System of Abbott World Marathon Majors. VPBank Hanoi Marathon results can be used to qualify at any of the World Six Majors, including the prestigious Boston Marathon.
